Upgrade Your Leash Clip

from $18.00

The clip, the connector between the line and the harness or collar, is a critical part of the tracking system. I offer 3 different clips because each handler has her own preferences. Your clip will be sized appropriately to the line you buy. The scissors clip and the bolt clip are rated in the range of (approximately) 150 – 250 pounds working load. The Kong Frog clip is rated at 5600 pounds (approximately) working load. It’s . . . special. (These values are for the ⅝” and ¾” clips. Smaller clips are rated for smaller loads.)

STANDARD CLIPS - included in the price of the leash at no extra charge.

Scissors clips are my favorite inexpensive clip. It is strong, secure, lightweight, and fairly glove friendly. Available for ½”, ⅝" and ¾".

Bolt clips are the ones found on most leashes and longlines. They are stronger and heavier than a scissors clip, quite secure but not particularly glove-friendly. Available for ⅜”, ½”, ⅝" and ¾".

UPGRADED CLIPS -

Kong Frog clip

Please Note: Kong Frog Clips are available for ⅝" and ¾" lines only.

The Kong Frog clip is a relatively new clip on the market. I have been selling these for several years now and (as of this writing September 2023) have had zero known failures in the field. This clip is rated at 5700 pounds working load, I recommend it for some high drive and heavy dogs. It has pros and cons. I will attempt to appraise you of these:

Pros:

  • The clip is lightweight. It weighs less than the lockjaw clip.

  • The clip is strong, it has a rated working load of more than 5000 pounds.

  • The clip is secure and easy to use. This clip is more secure than a bolt clip or lockjaw clip. It requires 2 tabs to be pushed simultaneously in order to open. Placement of the tabs make accomplishing extremely easily even with gloves on.

Cons:

  • This clip does not have a swivel. I can attach a stainless steel swivel that will alleviate this problem. This Increases weight at the dog end of the leash.

  • This clip is expensive. This clip will raise the price of your line depending on what it costs me to buy it.

Please Note: This clip does not look like a traditional clip. It is flat and wide. This causes a problem on some harnesses. If your harness has a D ring that lays flat against your dogs back, it will be necessary to put a metal adapter between the D ring and the Kong frog clip so that the Kong frog clip will also lay flat against your dog’s back. I have these adapters. If you have a harness as described above, please send me a photo of it and I’ll include an adapter.
